Certificate Course in Art Therapy

This module explores how to work with figurative images and facilitate deeper expression through art. Students learn how unconscious material emerges into awareness and how to support this process therapeutically. Using the House–Tree–Person task, these principles are applied to a wide range of representational imagery.

This module examines the inner scripts we carry unconsciously and how they shape thoughts, behaviours and relationships. Drawing on schema therapy and Jungian perspectives, students learn how to identify, assess and transform limiting narratives into healthier patterns.

This module explores how the unconscious can support meaningful goal-setting and change. Students learn to identify unconscious barriers and strengths, and how these are expressed symbolically through imagery, supporting clients to move forward with clarity, purpose and increased self-awareness.

This module introduces key theories of art therapy and the structure of effective therapeutic work, including assessment, case formulation and treatment planning. Students develop advanced communication skills specific to working with unconscious material and explore the therapeutic use of three-dimensional sculptural processes.

This module focuses on working with abstract imagery in a phenomenological and experiential way, supporting clients to access unconscious material in the present moment. Students learn how to use art in therapy (rather than art as therapy) to facilitate insight, integration and growth.

This module introduces approaches to trauma integration through symbolic work. Students learn how to support clients in processing overwhelming experiences, developing authenticity, and building meaningful and connected relationships.

This module explores how art therapy supports lasting change through neuroplasticity, focusing on how new responses can emerge from unconscious processes rather than being imposed cognitively. Students learn how imagery can reveal more adaptive ways of responding to triggers, stress and entrenched behavioural patterns, allowing change to develop naturally and with greater personal meaning.

Drawing on current research in neuroplasticity and clinical practice, the module develops the ability to facilitate change that is not only understood intellectually, but experienced and integrated at a deeper level, supporting more sustainable and long-term shifts in behaviour and emotional response.

This module explores how a wide range of creative modalities can be used within art therapy, including visual art, music, movement, dance, storytelling, writing, play therapy and sandplay. Students learn how to work effectively with different forms of creative expression, supporting clients to access deeper insight regardless of the medium they are drawn to.

The focus is not on the modality itself, but on how creative processes can be used therapeutically to engage unconscious material. Students develop the ability to work with art in therapy (rather than art as therapy), facilitating meaningful insight and lasting change beyond surface-level expression.

This module explores how to design and facilitate effective art therapy groups across a wide range of settings, including community programs, private practice, rehabilitation services and work with specialised client groups. Students learn how to guide group processes in a way that supports connection, shared experience and meaningful therapeutic outcomes.

The module focuses on how group work can move beyond supportive interaction to foster deeper insight and personal change. Through shared creative processes, unconscious material begins to emerge, allowing participants to gain insight into their own experiences while learning from others. Participants feel less isolated and are supported to engage with their own material in a way that encourages reflection, growth and renewed direction.

This experiential module invites students to engage in a series of therapeutic processes, gaining insight into the client journey. It integrates key concepts from across the course and supports the development of reflective practice, self-awareness and professional identity as an art therapist. Students explore approaches such as neurographic art while deepening their capacity to work meaningfully with clients through personal insight and integration.
