Re: Online Introduction, Certificate & Diploma Courses in Art Therapy
If you’d like to use art therapy in your job or you’re thinking of becoming a fulltime art therapist but are unable to attend a master’s degree course at your local university, you’ve come to the right place. You’ve found just the course you need!
As you might expect, many countries require some formal education to practice as a counsellor or psychotherapist. Art therapy can often be practiced without any formal education, but to ensure the integrity of the profession and the safety of those seeking professional help, we recommend that you do more than an online course before seeing clients. If you are a psychologist or professional counsellor, CECAT’s comprehensive courses are all you need to incorporate art therapy into the services you offer.
If you don’t have a background in counselling, our online courses will give you a full and thorough education in art therapy. However, we recommend perfecting your knowledge and expertise through another course that includes personal input and mentoring from a qualified person. To this end, you might consider including the Skype addon service we offer or participating in the 5-Day Intensive we run. Alternatively, you could enrol in a face-to-face counselling course or something similar. This will give you a more rounded education to practice art therapy.
I Think I’m A lot Like You…
I wasn’t always the guy teaching thousands of people about art therapy and how to become an amazing art therapist…
And frankly, my own journey started with asking lots of questions about why we do what we do while exploring lots of ways to help others in their own journey of self-discovery.
Even from my early years, my primary interest lay in helping people grow and where necessary, to heal and recover. My mother was a psychologist and Freudian psychoanalyst. Throughout my upbringing, I would spend many hours learning from her and discussing different theories with her. My father was a philosopher and an author who took a strong worldly approach in his life. This created a lot of discussion around the meaning and purpose of life.
Understanding what makes people tick has been a lifelong passion for me and discovering tools and techniques to assist them has shaped my own journey.
If you’re reading this, you also desire to help people, right?
You want to make this world a better place for all people, now and well into the future. And you’re keen to learn the tools and techniques that can help make this happen.
It’s a real pleasure to meet you.
I think you’ll benefit from what I’ve learnt and what I’d like to share with you.
You See, I’ve Spent the Last 20+ Years of My Life Learning Everything There Is to Know About Art Therapy
Early Days & An Unfolding Journey
After experiencing the painful divorce of my parents, I followed my heart, studying theology and pastoral counselling for 10 years. I then studied art therapy for five years in Germany and was fortunate to benefit from many of the greatest minds and most experienced clinicians in this field.
Shortly after the birth of my beautiful children, I explored the teachings of Buddha. The wisdom of these teachings appealed to me deeply, especially the idea of becoming more patient, letting go of attachments and understanding the transience of emotions. Along with this deepening spiritual understanding, I embarked on another degree to strengthen my foundation in psychotherapy, studying psychology for a further five years.
17 years ago, I was working at Forster Community Health Centre in Australia as a Children, Young People and Family Counsellor, Art Therapist and Psychologist. My colleagues at Forster approached me to teach them the principles of art therapy in order to use the insights and skills gained to assist them in working with their clients. Through these lectures, the idea of the College for Educational and Clinical Art Therapy (CECAT) turned into a vision that continues to inspire me and my students today.
An Enriched Journey & Our Growing Influence
CECAT was born out of this journey, a mixture of psychology, theology and philosophy that is grounded in a passion to make this world a better place for all people, both now and into the future.
Serving as a psychotherapist for 26 years, I’ve taught art therapy in Australia for 17 years and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to share my expertise with students around the world over the past decade. I’ve worked with more than a thousand students from across Australia and I’ve had the pleasure of teaching in 36 different countries to date.
The idea of online art therapy courses emerged organically. I remember being asked by a student from Perth in 2010, “Can I do this course through distance education?” Initially, I hesitated, knowing that nobody offered professional art therapy courses online at that stage. Seeing her hunger to learn, and knowing she represented many who were just as eager to study the concepts and power of art therapy, I pioneered the online program. And the rest, as they say, is history.
I’ve Also Read Dozens of the Most Popular Art Therapy Books that University Lecturers Recommend these Days and Reviewed Thousands of Articles in Many Different Languages
From all I’ve studied and experienced, I wrote the book entitled, Art Therapy and Psychology, A Step-by-step Guide for Practitioners.
Hands-on and rich with supportive study tools, it includes numerous case studies to which the reader can relate. The book is essential reading for art therapists in training and in practice, psychologists and mental health professionals looking to establish or grow their expertise.
And it is from this rich treasure chest of experience that I have designed the online courses now made available to you.
You see, most art therapy books and courses that you can find online come entirely from English-speaking countries. Furthermore, they’re often designed merely to inform rather than teaching the student to practice art therapy.
As I have a German-speaking background, a Spanish-speaking mother, and I’ve taught art therapy in person in 36 countries (and counting), the knowledge you learn in these courses goes far beyond the English-speaking world.
What’s more, it provides you with both the knowledge required and the practical skills needed, enabling you to start working immediately after graduating from CECAT.
So, Here Are the Courses on Offer…

The Certificate Course offers a comprehensive education in art therapy. If you’re a licensed psychologist or professional counsellor, it provides all you need to integrate art therapy into your counselling services.
If you don’t have a background in counselling, we highly recommend doing further in-person or on-campus studies in counselling if your goal is to become a professional counsellor. Why? For this reason, we offer our Skype addon services or our on-campus intensives.

Here’s What One of My Students had to Say…
“This course has been one of the most impressive and inspirational courses in psychology I have taken…
I have been a Clinical Psychologist in private practice for 5 years and a psychologist working in a number of settings for over 20 years. I was excited to find the CECAT Art Therapy online course run by Rob Gray.
I highly recommend this course to any health professional interested in both personal and professional development. Rob is very knowledgeable and an experienced practitioner. I feel that my understanding of psychology has been deepened through contact with him, so much so that completing the Certificate Course in Art Therapy, I have chosen to have supervision with him.
The online course worked extremely well due to the flexibility of times to complete tasks, the comprehensive theoretical notes provided by Rob and the experiential nature of the course where for each of the 10 modules there was exposure to a meaningful art therapy task.
This course has been one of the most impressive and inspirational courses in psychology I have taken, and I sincerely thank Rob for the enriching experience.”
