I wasn’t always the guy teaching thousands of people about art therapy and how to become an amazing art therapist…
And frankly, my own journey started with asking lots of questions about why we do what we do while exploring lots of ways to help others in their own journey of self-discovery.
Even from my early years, my primary interest lay in helping people grow and where necessary, to heal and recover. My mother was a psychologist and Freudian psychoanalyst. Throughout my upbringing, I would spend many hours learning from her and discussing different theories with her. My father was a philosopher and an author who took a strong worldly approach in his life. This created a lot of discussion around the meaning and purpose of life.
Understanding what makes people tick has been a lifelong passion for me and discovering tools and techniques to assist them has shaped my own journey.

You See, I’ve Spent the Last 20+ Years of My Life Learning Everything There Is to Know About Art Therapy
Early Days & An Unfolding Journey
After experiencing the painful divorce of my parents, I followed my heart, studying theology and pastoral counselling for 10 years. I then studied art therapy for five years in Germany and was fortunate to benefit from many of the greatest minds and most experienced clinicians in this field.
Shortly after the birth of my beautiful children, I explored the teachings of Buddha. The wisdom of these teachings appealed to me deeply, especially the idea of becoming more patient, letting go of attachments and understanding the transience of emotions. Along with this deepening spiritual understanding, I embarked on another degree to strengthen my foundation in psychotherapy, studying psychology for a further five years.
17 years ago, I was working at Forster Community Health Centre in Australia as a Children, Young People and Family Counsellor, Art Therapist and Psychologist. My colleagues at Forster approached me to teach them the principles of art therapy in order to use the insights and skills gained to assist them in working with their clients. Through these lectures, the idea of the College for Educational and Clinical Art Therapy (CECAT) turned into a vision that continues to inspire me and my students today.
An Enriched Journey & Our Growing Influence
CECAT was born out of this journey, a mixture of psychology, theology and philosophy that is grounded in a passion to make this world a better place for all people, both now and into the future.
Serving as a psychotherapist for 26 years, I’ve taught art therapy in Australia for 17 years and I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to share my expertise with students around the world over the past decade. I’ve worked with more than a thousand students from across Australia and I’ve had the pleasure of teaching in 36 different countries to date.
The idea of online art therapy courses emerged organically. I remember being asked by a student from Perth in 2010, “Can I do this course through distance education?” Initially, I hesitated, knowing that nobody offered professional art therapy courses online at that stage.
